Did you know that your habits, including the bad ones, are like computer programs that run in the background? However, when a computer program is updated with new information the old program is gone. When the human brain gleans improved information, it does not delete the old information and your unconscious brain prefers to run the old familiar programs. So, unless you consciously intervene the unproductive patterns of behaviour will persist. Jonathan Haidt, a well-known leadership expert introduced the useful analogy of an elephant and rider which is shown in the attached picture. When thinking about changing behaviours, we all like to consider ourselves as the conscious rider, planning ahead, choosing what to do and where to go. But unless you carefully watch your elephant, (the unconscious part of your brain), it will go where it feels comfortable and do what it’s always done.
